Beau Ford, the Digital Equity and Inclusion Program Manager for the New Mexico State Library, joined the Broadband Bunch podcast to discuss his work bridging the digital divide across the state.

From Detroit to Digital Inclusion

Ford came from Detroit, where he helped sign up over 400 residents for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) while working for a community organization. His success in that role led him to the position with the New Mexico State Library last October.

Defining Digital Equity

Ford explains that digital equity is about ensuring everyone has access to connectivity, devices, and training regardless of their circumstances. It’s providing the “high tech” and “high touch” help that communities need, whether it’s basic skills like using email or more advanced education.

Strategies in New Mexico

A major focus is building capacity by deploying digital navigators and securing digital skills training licenses for all 130+ public libraries across New Mexico, including 30+ tribal libraries. Other initiatives include expanding telehealth privacy booths and supporting workforce development programs.

The Library as a Community Hub

Libraries play a vital role as a hub for digital equity efforts. Ford aims to train librarians while building trust with local communities to understand their unique needs. He draws parallels to his earlier baseball career, coaching libraries just as he once coached players, with grit and determination.

The podcast highlights how libraries can connect people to education, jobs, telemedicine and more – providing dignity through digital access. As Ford says, “People shouldn’t have to pay for culture.” With creative solutions like ACP and partnerships, the goal is to make digital equity sustainable.
