Chelan County PUD’s open access network currently operates and maintains the fiber infrastructure for 15 ISPs who provide competitive services to both residences and businesses. The network has become increasingly complex to manage and legacy tools have now been outgrown. Extending coverage, adding additional ISPs or innovative services to expand economic development was neither easy nor efficient.
CHALLENGES
Chelan started offering wholesale fiber broadband in 2002 on an open access network and is now challenged to expand coverage to more customer/owners throughout the county, replace legacy tools to simplify management and increase operational efficiency while reducing operating costs.
Expanding network operations and accompanying management software must be focused on reliability and scalability, improving customer service, encouraging innovation and maintaining fiscally responsible to Chelan County PUD customer-owners.
